Shares in Nasdaq-listed cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase (COIN) are quickly approaching an overvaluation threshold, as noted by 10x Research, led by Markus Thielen. Thielen is suggesting a strategy that involves taking a short position in COIN while simultaneously taking a long position in bitcoin (BTC).

In a message to clients, Thielen pointed out that Coinbase’s fundamentals, specifically trading volumes, have not kept up with the surge in share prices, which are rapidly approaching the overvaluation threshold, signaling a potential “tactical reversal.”

“While Coinbase has not yet crossed the +30% overvaluation mark, it is rapidly approaching it. Despite being a top-tier listed crypto investment, its current premium indicates potential underperformance in the future,” Thielen explained. “Traders interested in taking advantage of this discrepancy may want to consider buying Bitcoin while shorting Coinbase, or utilizing options by selling a COIN call and purchasing a BTC call to express the same viewpoint with defined risk.”

Fundamental analysis conducted by 10x’s linear regression model shows that 75% of Coinbase’s stock price movement is influenced by changes in bitcoin’s price and trading volumes. This means that only 25% of COIN’s price shifts are due to other factors, such as the impact of Circle’s IPO or developments in the U.S. crypto and macro landscape.

Based on these calculations, COIN’s price typically increases by $20 for every $10,000 movement in BTC and by $24 for every $100 billion uptick in trading volume.

Recent market trends suggest that the rally in COIN’s price has outpaced the increases in bitcoin’s price and trading volumes. While Coinbase’s shares have surged by 84% in the last two months, bitcoin has only risen by 14%.

“This premium is not only stretched in relation to bitcoin’s current price but also appears to be disconnected from the actual crypto trading volumes, which stand at around $108 billion,” Thielen noted. “This divergence implies that Coinbase’s valuation is inflated and susceptible to correction.”

The report also indicates that other factors, such as Circle’s IPO, the “GENIUS” stablecoin bill on June 17, and the heightened buying activity from Korean investors, have likely been factored into the current prices.

“As the momentum slows down, as evidenced by recent reversals in Circle, KakaoPay, and Metaplanet, there is a mounting risk that Coinbase shares may also be approaching a local peak,” Thielen warned.

Three new reports this week from CryptoQuant, Glassnode, and trading firm Flowdesk all point to low volatility, tight price action, and subdued on-chain activity. CryptoQuant has issued a warning that BTC could soon revisit $92,000 support or even fall as low as $81,000. Other reports see the same signals and arrive at different conclusions.

In its weekly on-chain update, Glassnode acknowledges that the Bitcoin blockchain is “quiet,” with transaction counts down, fees minimal, and miner revenue subdued. The derivatives market now dwarfs on-chain activity, with futures and options volumes regularly exceeding spot volumes.

Market maker and trading firm Flowdesk describes the market as “coiled.” While altcoin flows are thinning and market-making volumes are flat, there is a surge in tokenized assets and stablecoin growth.

A new report from Presto Research argues that Crypto Treasury Companies (CTCs) are a new form of financial engineering with less risk than many investors assume. Strategy and Metaplanet, two CTCs, have shown that BTC’s volatility can be used to their advantage.

Semler Scientific has unveiled an aggressive bitcoin accumulation roadmap, aiming to own 105,000 BTC by the end of 2027. The California-based medical device maker plans to use a mix of equity raises, debt financing, and operational cash flow to achieve this goal.

The total value locked on major DeFi lending protocols, including Aave, Euler, Spark, and Morpho, has exceeded $50 billion and is steadily approaching $60 billion, marking a 60% growth over the past year. This growth is attributed to the rapid institutionalization of the sector and the development of advanced risk management tools.

A key trend highlighted in the report is the integration of DeFi infrastructure into user-facing applications, creating a seamless experience for users. This trend, often referred to as the “DeFi mullet,” involves fintech front-end applications utilizing DeFi backend infrastructure to offer yield or loans. For example, Coinbase users can borrow against their Bitcoin holdings through the DeFi lender Morpho’s infrastructure. Another significant trend noted in the report is the emergence of crypto-native asset managers. Firms like Gauntlet, Re7, and Steakhouse Financial are allocating capital across DeFi ecosystems using professionally managed strategies, similar to traditional asset managers. These asset managers are actively involved in DeFi protocol governance, adjusting risk parameters, and investing in structured yield products, tokenized RWAs, and modular lending markets.

Overall, the DeFi sector is experiencing substantial growth and evolving towards a more sophisticated financial ecosystem with various opportunities for users and investors alike.

This development mirrors the increasing optimism in crypto markets following the election of U.S. President Donald Trump, who recently expressed his support for cryptocurrencies. The administration’s efforts to streamline regulations governing the industry have spurred several companies to consider going public. For instance, stablecoin issuer Circle (CRCL) saw a 168% surge in its stock price on its first day of trading, while Bullish, backed by Peter Thiel, is reportedly eyeing an IPO. Bullish Group, the parent company of both CoinDesk and Bullish Exchange, is involved in this move.
