The European Parliament has strongly condemned Turkey for removing elected opposition mayors, calling for their immediate release, acquittal, and reinstatement.
EU lawmakers criticized Ankara’s actions, warning of Turkey’s growing disregard for democratic principles and the rule of law. Officials also denounced the appointment of government-backed trustees to replace elected representatives.
In response, Brussels is now weighing possible sanctions against Turkish officials involved in the political crackdown.
